Scope

Ashcroft & Weiss LLP advises principally on transactions and disputes for governments, financial institutions and the boards of public companies. The work to which the SRA Transparency Rules require the publication of indicative price information — for example, residential conveyancing, immigration, employment tribunals, debt recovery, licensing and probate — does not form part of our practice. We accordingly do not maintain published price ranges for those services.

How we charge

Fees are quoted at the outset of each engagement in our engagement letter and are typically based on time spent at the hourly rates of the lawyers performing the work, together with any agreed fixed, capped or value-based components. Disbursements (including counsel’s fees, court fees and external experts) are charged at cost.

Our hourly rates are reviewed annually. Rates and any rate changes are confirmed in writing in advance. We do not pursue speculative work, and we do not act on a contingent or conditional basis save where local rules expressly permit and the engagement letter so provides.

Engagement letters

Every retainer is recorded in an engagement letter that sets out the scope of work, the partner with overall responsibility, the basis of charging, the firm’s standard terms of business and any terms negotiated for the matter. Material changes to scope or staffing are notified to the client in writing.

Complaints handling

We are committed to providing a high-quality service. Complaints should in the first instance be addressed to the partner responsible for the matter. If the complaint is not resolved you may raise it with the General Counsel at the registered office. Where applicable, you may have the right to make a complaint to the Legal Ombudsman or to the Solicitors Regulation Authority. Further information is set out in our Regulatory Information.

Diversity data

We publish aggregated workforce diversity data biennially in accordance with the SRA’s reporting requirements. The most recent return is available on request from the firm’s General Counsel.

Pro bono and community

The firm maintains a pro bono programme through which lawyers act without charge for individuals, charities and not-for-profit organisations whose matters fall within the firm’s areas of competence. The programme is overseen by a partner-led committee.
